Flood Mitigation

A flood is an overflow of water (or rarely other fluids) that submerges land that is usually dry.

Floods are the deadliest, costliest and most common form of natural disaster in the United States and in the world. They are caused by hurricanes, heavy rainfall, overflowing rivers, broken dams, overfilled urban drainage basins, tsunamis, water channels with steep sides, and ice- or snow-melt. Floods are difficult to predict, which means states must be prepared to respond at all times.

In 2021, Malaysia experienced one of the worst flooding that resulted in a loss of USD 1.4 billion, which claimed 54 lives and affected more than 300,000 families. Environmental experts estimated that Malaysia’s absolute volume of rainfall has increased by 15 percent in the last 40 years. The government has also announced implementing a Flood Mitigation Plan worth USD 3.3 billion until 2030 as a long-term strategy to adapt to the country’s climate change.

Heavy rains have caused catastrophic flooding in southern Brazil killing at least 100 people and leaving thousands more homeless. The southern state of Rio Grande do Sul was hit by heavy rain last week and subsequent flooding has washed away roads, collapsed bridges and caused landslides across the state. The latest estimates from the state civil defence authority say that 372 people have been injured and as many as 128 are still unaccounted for. More than 1.45 million people across 417 of the state’s 497 cities have been affected and the latest estimates suggest more than 200,000 people...
